Global Communication is an electronic music act, composed of Tom Middleton and Mark Pritchard. Their debut LP, 76:14 is one of the most acclaimed albums from the ambient music genre and from 1990s electronic music in general.
Beyond their work as Global Communication, they have also recorded as Jedi Knights, Secret Ingredients, The Chameleon, Link & E621 and Reload; have done multiple remixes for various artists under each of their aliases, (including a 1993 Reload remix of "On" by Aphex Twin and a 1997 Jedi Knights remix of "Home" by Depeche Mode; and founded the Evolution Records and Universal Language Productions labels.
76:14 was originally released in 1994 on Dedicated, the album has been re-issued a number of times, most recently in 2005 in an expanded and remastered version.
The title of the album is the total length of the album in minutes and seconds. Each track on the album is titled simply with the length of the song. The artists state in the sleeve notes of the album that this was intended to avoid implying any specific meaning in the music, and thus leave listeners completely free to interpret the music according to their own imaginations.
In 2005, the album was reissued with a bonus disc featuring singles released before and after the album, as well as enhanced packaging and new liner notes from the group and notable fans of the album. The bonus tracks are notably much more in the vein of house and jazzy techno than the more ambient, mostly beatless album.
The album is featured in The Guardian's 1,000 Albums to Hear Before You Die list. It is described as an "unfathomably beautiful out-of-time masterpiece."
My favorite track on the album is 14:31, which I first discovered in an online game I used to play called Majestic, which was put out by EA Games. The games has been canceled, but for those who bought the CD version, you got most of the songs heard in the game as a bonus soundtrack CD. It's supposed to be 14 minutes and 31 seconds long, but due to some silence at the end, it's 14:33.
